What Do the Numbers on Tires Mean?

Person using tire pressure gauge on a tire

Whether you’re checking your air pressure in South Miami or getting ready to buy a new set of tires in South Miami, you may have noticed a series of numbers and letters on the sidewalls of your tires. So, what do the numbers on tires mean? These symbols represent information about your tire type, performance, size, and more. Take a closer look at your tire number meaning with the service team at HGreg Nissan Kendall.

Tire Number Meaning

The number on your tires may not make much sense at first glance, but each section provides unique information about your particular set. For this example, let’s use the code: P215/65R15 95H.

  • The P stands for “P-Metric tire”, or a tire used for passenger vehicles. You might see LT for “light truck” or if there is no letter in front of the code, you have a European style tire or “Euro-Metric” type.
  • The number 215 indicates the width of your tire in millimeters from one sidewall to the other. In this case, the tire width is 215 millimeters.
  • After the slash, you’ll see the aspect ratio of “65”. The aspect ratio is the height of the tire’s cross-section compared to its width. This tire’s height equals 65% of the tire’s width. A bigger aspect ratio means bigger sidewalls.
  • The R indicates the tire construction, or “radial” in this case.
  • The 15 showcases the wheel size. This tire can fit a 15-inch wheel.
  • The 95H stands for the load index and speed rating. The load index ranges from 75 to 105, and it reveals how much weight the tire can support when properly inflated. The H is the speed rating, which ranges from A to Z. A tire with an H rating can reach up to 130 MPH.

So when you’re getting ready to buy a new set of tires, understanding your tire number’s meaning can help guide you through the shopping process. But of course, the team at our tire shop is happy to help you find just the right set for your needs!
